Population Density Calculator

People per square mile.

Change the example inputs to your own values. Check the method and limitations below.

How to use this calculator

Enter Population, Land area (sq mi). The result updates in your browser as you edit an input. The prefilled values are examples only.

How the estimate works

Divide population by land area in square miles.

What can change the answer?

Some datasets report total area including water; use land area for a comparable people-per-square-mile measure. Source years should match.

Before relying on the result

Check that both figures describe the intended geographic boundary and reference period. Confirm units, source definitions and any uncertainty information in the original dataset. The calculator does not independently verify those details or explain the causes of a change.

Worked example with the default inputs

A population of 108,000 divided by 50 square miles of land gives 2,160 people per square mile. Including water in the denominator would describe a different measure.

Interpret the result in a planning record

The population density calculator divides people by land area in square miles. Use a consistent area definition and source year. Total area including water is a different denominator from land area, so two density figures may not be comparable until you check that detail. An area-wide average also does not describe every neighborhood equally.

Save the input values, units and result together. Change one uncertain input at a time so you can see which assumption moves the answer. A displayed decimal is arithmetic precision, rather than evidence that the measurements or rates are equally precise.
